Because of the similarity of the the structures of hCG and TSH, hCG has some thyrotrophic action. When very high circulating levels of hCG are found, such as in patients with hydatidiform mole or choriocarcinoma the excess release of thyroid hormone may, rarely, cause thyrotoxicosis.
